No work is of greater importance for God's glory than the education of the young. Teach them to speak the truth, to be honest in speech and behaviour, even if they have to suffer for it.

— Mother Mary Charles Magdalen Walker, Foundress
Brief History

Our Foundation in Education

The Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus is a religious Congregation whose Foundress, Mother Mary Charles Magdalen Walker, RSC, was a disciplined and seasoned educationist. Therefore, education is the main apostolate of our Congregation.

Article 64 of our Constitutions states: "We establish standard educational institutes that meet the demands of our times." The HHCJ Education Office was established to coordinate and supervise our institutions — giving quality and standard that is classic and meets the demands of modern times.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria affirms that the Church invested heavily and fruitfully in quality education in Nigeria. Our schools have been and remain known for their good academic and moral standards and their non-discriminatory policies.

"I congratulate you and the girls of St. Joseph's School, Anua, on the success you have achieved in being classified as A+… the first in the history of the mission that a Girls' School has honourably carried off the much coveted honour of being officially classified as EXCELLENT." — Bishop Joseph Shanahan, CSSp

Mission & Vision

Our Purpose & Direction

Guided by our Foundress's legacy, the HHCJ Education Office pursues holistic transformation through quality Catholic education.

Our Mission

Excellence Through Quality Enhancement

The HHCJ Education Office is committed to excellence through quality enhancement in all our schools. We share in the teaching ministry of Christ — teaching, training, and preparing our students to meet the challenges of life, not just to obtain certificates.

We teach and train our pupils in the love of God, for the purpose for which life was given — to love God and neighbour — to live as children of God.

Our Vision

Transformation of Persons

Our vision is geared toward the transformation of persons in our different apostolates, especially in the field of education. We understand that when the learning and teaching of the whole person continually improve, every other thing improves.

Our inspiration is drawn from our Mother Foundress — an Educationist Par Excellence — whose motto called us to care deeply for the young, forming them with honesty, truth, and virtue for a life of purpose.

Objectives

What We Set Out to Achieve

Our objectives are anchored in the vision of our Foundress and the mandate of our Congregation — to establish and maintain standard educational institutions that meet the demands of our times.

01
Maintain High Standards

Preserve and build upon the high academic and moral standards established since the inception of our institutions — a legacy from our Foundress that continues to define us.

02
Coordinate & Supervise

Provide unified coordination and supervision across all HHCJ educational institutions to ensure consistency, quality, and alignment with the values of the Congregation.

03
Holistic Formation

Form the whole person — in morals, discipline, virtues, and academics — preparing students to meet the challenges of life and become responsible citizens of God's kingdom.

04
Catholic Identity

Uphold and promote the Catholic identity of all HHCJ institutions, ensuring that the faith dimension remains central to every aspect of education and school life.

05
Inclusive Education

Extend our educational ministry to include special schools for children and adults with disabilities, ensuring no one is left behind in our mission of service.

06
Continuous Improvement

Continuously evaluate and improve our educational programmes to remain current, relevant, and responsive to the evolving demands of students, society, and the Church.
